He was born on May 14, 1952 in Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, United Kingdom and is the first of two children born to his parents – Tom (father) and Emma (mother).
He traveled around with his family before they decided to settle in the United States when he was 9 years old. His father, Tom, earned his living as an electronics engineer while his mother lived as a teacher. He was raised both Catholic and Presbyterian, as his mother practiced the later while his father practiced the former.
