BIOGRAPHY
Phoebe Cates is an American former actress, singer and model. From the age of fourteen Phoebe was already an in-demand model, appearing on the covers of Seventeens, Elle and British Vogue magazines, as well as numerous designs in other magazines. She made her film debut as Sarah in Paradise (1982) and the same year starred as Linda Barrett in Girlfriends (1982), which featured what Rolling Stone described as “the most memorable bikini scene in film history.” The following year, she participated in the comedy Private School All Girls (1983), which co-starred Matthew Modine and Betsy Russell, and for which she sang on two songs on the film’s soundtrack. Cates’ later roles were more modest and largely geared toward younger audiences, such as the two Gremlins films and the 1991 film Fred Get Out! . Cates retired from acting in 1994 to raise her children, but she returned in 2001 for a film, The Anniversary Party , as a favor to her best friend Jennifer Jason Leigh, who directed the film. Phoebe is one of the names that is repeated the most in the third season of Stanger Things , as a tribute by the Duffer brothers.
