Michael Cohen was born on August 25, 1966to a Jewish father – Maurice Cohen, who was a Holocaust survivor. His mother, Sandra, was a nurse practitioner and he grew up in the town of Lawrence on Long Island. Micheal attended Lawrence Woodmere Academy after which he continued his education at United Methodist United Affiliated American University in Washington, D.C. where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He received his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1991.
Career
Cohen’s law school classmates say he was not necessarily the brightest of students and never imagined himself having a successful career at the top of the legal profession. In 1992, he began working for Melvyn Estrin in Manhattan as a personal injury attorney. Alongside his legal practice, he ventured into managing taxis in New York.
Cohen has business interests in real estate and in 2003 he was CEO of MLA Cruises, Inc. and the Atlantic Casino. He made a smooth foray into politics in 2003, when he took a seat on the New York City Council but was defeated by Democratic candidate Eva S. Moskowitz.
Prior to joining the Trump Organization in 2006, Michael Cohen briefly worked as an attorney at Phillips Nizer LLP. At the Trump Organization, Cohen soon rose to special counsel and executive vice president, and also sits on the board of the Eric Trump Foundation.
In 2008, when Trump bought the majority shareholding of martial arts and entertainment company Affliction Entertainment, Cohen was named chief operating officer. He also served as co-chairman of an affiliate that manages Trump’s New Jersey casino operations.
When his boss joined the presidential race, Cohen entered the ring with him and played a key role in the campaign, making appearances on national talk shows, campaigning and further elucidating the political positions of Trump.
After Trump won the election, Cohen quit his job with the Trump Organization but retained his role as a personal adviser. He was also appointed Deputy Chairman of National Finance for the Republican National Committee responsible for party fundraising.
Investigations and controversies
In January 2017, Michael Cohen was named in The Trump-Russia Dossier, a document by Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer, claiming there was a scheme to interfere with the election with the connivance of elements in the on Trump’s team. According to the report, Cohen was in Prague in 2016 to expedite the cover-up that would be deemed illegal.

In 2018, Cohen found himself embroiled in more controversy, which erupted when a Wall Street Journal published that he paid porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 in 2016 as a “sum of ‘money’ for her affair with Trump. Cohen claims to have made the payment out of pocket without Trump’s knowledge.
In April 2018, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York opened a federal criminal investigation against Micheal Cohen, charged with violations of campaign finance law, bank fraud, and wire fraud. The Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the Cohen law firm’s office, home and hotel room at the Loews Regency Hotel in New York, angering the president, who fears that the protection of professional secrecy is defended.
