On November 4, 1972, Jeff Kaplan was born in New Jersey. However, it was in La Cañada Flintridge, California that he was raised alongside his brother, Jason.
Kaplan’s main interest as he grew up was to become a creative writer. He took this dream so seriously that he went to study creative writing at the University of Southern California. After graduating, his goal was to continue his studies and then get published. Therefore, he moved to New York University where he continued his studies in the same field.
However, when he was done, reality soon hit him as he was unable to get any of his works published, including his short stories and poetry. More so, he received over a hundred rejection letters.
Long before that, Kaplan was a gamer and so, after failing as a writer, he decided to return to gaming and, through the fantasy game EverQuest he was playing, he met Rob Pardo, Blizzard’s lead designer for Warcraft III. . . Pardo later informed Jeff of a possible job opening, which led to him getting his job at Blizzard.
Eventually, he caught on and got involved in a number of projects, including World of Warcraft where he was the game director. In the franchise, he was the designer for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002). , World of Warcraft (2004), World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (2007), and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (2008). He was also the designer of the 2013 game Titan before it was cancelled. In 2016, he became the lead designer and game director of Overwatch.
