Christopher was born to a lawyer named Samuel R. Lloyd Jr. and a singer named Ruth Lapham. His mother was the sister of Roger Lapham, the 32nd mayor of San Francisco, and the daughter of Lewis Henry Lapham, successful American entrepreneur and co-founder of Texaco Oil Company. She was born in 1896 and died at age 88.
